About Us Our History

In Canada's Centennial year, 1967, the concept of a Senior's Home for Christians was first raised by an elderly member of the Bracondale assembly. After much prodding on Miss Wilder's part, a discussion meeting was held early that year. A Board of Directors was formed, and plans were underway. The goal, at that time, was to provide a loving Christian environment for seniors, where Biblical teachings, fellowship, service and hospitality would be available.

An Open House was held on the building site in the fall of 1967. Construction commenced in October, 1969, and the first residents were able to move in the following year. The new home was well received by all, and by March, 1971, discussions were held about the addition of Phase II.

During 1975, the second phase of the building was begun and completed. The final phase of the complex, Bethany Manor, was added during the early 1980's. This wing included two floors of private apartments for independent residents. In addition to living quarters, a swimming pool and large auditorium, with kitchen facilities, were added on the ground level.

Modifications have continued on a regular basis. In 1990, a new, modern kitchen was added as well as an attractive, sunshine-flooded entranceway and sitting area.

In 1995, work began on the Bethany Courts, a separate building located to the east of the main Bethany building. (Further details re the Courts can be obtained elsewhere on this site.) In 1999, the nursing stations on both floors were expanded and upgraded. A large, octagon-shaped sitting room was added on the lower level. Situated beside the outdoor patio, and built with a glass-domed ceiling, this room has proved very popular with the downstairs residents. In August, 2003, the Manor residents were welcomed to their new dining room, located on the site of the former swimming pool.

During 2003 and 2004, plans were being drawn up for our largest renovation since the initial construction of Bethany Lodge. In 2005, after 35 years of service and in compliance with new government regulations, we moved the Bethany Lodge residents to a new temporary location at Bethany West. On March 27th 2007, the newly built Bethany Lodge opened and welcomed 87 residents back to Unionville. The new home accomodates 128 residents in four units of operation. Now, a year later the home has full occupancy and is enjoying the number of beautiful ammenities the building has to offer.

Bethany Lodge’s community embraced Miss Wilder’s vision. Since then, Bethany Lodge has continued to adapt to the needs of its residents. The original vision for Bethany continues to expand, offering a wider range of services as ongoing innovative ideas and improvement of care are introduced.
